Dean Koontz is an author you can’t help but have heard of when you pick up a thriller or see his name at the top of the bestseller list. Over 450 million copies of his books have been sold worldwide and his books have been translated into 38 languages making Koontz not only an author but a global phenomenon of modern suspense. Thanks to his great stories, deep emotion and sci-fi/horror/mystery mix he has built a fan base that spans all ages and is very diverse.
Dean Koontz was born in July 1945, just before the end of World War II and from Pennsylvania. His early years were not good, actually they were tough and brutal. His father was violent and so his mother’s courage in the face of abuse had a big impact on him. The traumas of his childhood would later show up as underlying themes in the emotional parts of his work. The characters he creates are those who in one way or another encounter darkness – physical or emotional – but still hold onto hope, courage and strength like he does.
Koontz discovered he loved to write early on. While in Shippensburg State College he won a major writing contest sponsored by The Atlantic Monthly. The thumbs up he got from that encouraged him to write more. He got a teaching job and then joined a government program that worked with troubled youth. The job was hazardous as his predecessor ended up in the hospital after being attacked by one of the kids and it changed his view of politics, systems and society. Those issues are still in his deeper stories.
In 1968 Koontz published his first novel, Star Quest and it was the start of a wild ride. He went on to write over 100 books under 9 different names including Brian Coffey and David Axton. Early on he wrote science fiction but eventually he became famous for his suspenseful thrillers often with supernatural elements, philosophical questions and even heartwarming moments — especially with dogs.
Dogs play a big role in his writing. His golden retriever Trixie wasn’t just a pet, she was a muse. After Trixie passed away in 2007 he often said her spirit lived on in the canine characters he created. Dogs in his novels are often more than just companions — they’re protectors, guides and symbols of loyalty in a crazy world. Today he lives in Southern California with his wife Gerda and another golden retriever and is still writing and inspiring.
Some of his most popular works is the Odd Thomas series a thriller/paranormal mystery. The main character Odd can see and talk to the dead — a gift that helps and haunts him. The series became a fan favorite and was turned into graphic novels and a film. Another favorite is his modern retelling of Frankenstein where science meets horror in a whole new way. This series became two trilogies and was even made into a made-for-TV movie produced by Martin Scorsese.
Over the years more than a dozen of his books have been made into movies including Watchers a story about a genetically enhanced dog and a deadly creature. His novels like The Husband, Lightning, Shadowfires, and From the Corner of His Eye are still fan favorites not just for the thrills but for the humanity in the characters.Dean Koontz has been compared to other literary giants like Stephen King but his voice is unique. In 2008 he was the 6th highest paid author in the world — a testament to his popularity and productivity. Yet despite all the success he’s still a storyteller at heart — driven by curiosity, emotion and imagination.
Whether you’re just discovering his work or re-reading his books you know that reading Dean Koontz is never just about suspense — it’s about the journey through fear, love, loss and hope. Every book is a new adventure and for millions of readers that’s what keeps them coming back.
