About A. Trae McMaken
A. Trae McMaken is an author who captivates readers with his blend of fantasy fiction and memoirs. He is best known for his captivating “Dwarves of Ice-Cloak” series, which takes readers on epic journeys filled with complex characters and thrilling adventures. Trae lives on a beautiful property overlooking Lake Huron, where he enjoys a quiet life. He spends his days writing, playing the fiddle, and watching his flock of sheep graze in the fields. Though he once traveled widely as a singer, storyteller, fiddler, and folklorist, he now prefers the peaceful rhythms of life on his farm, where he continues to research, write, and play music with his friends.
Born and raised in China Township, Michigan, Trae grew up in a farmhouse on Puttygut Road, where he witnessed the transformation of the surrounding area. The changes in his hometown, as rural families were replaced by newcomers from Detroit, would later inspire many of his novels. While his writing is his main focus, Trae also works as a registered nurse, balancing his creative endeavors with his day job.
His passion for music runs deep. Growing up near the Ontario-Michigan border, Trae developed a love for traditional fiddling, drawing influences from Michigan Old Time, Ontario Old Time, Irish, Quebecois, and Scottish styles. He became a well-respected figure in the folk music world, even earning the title of Old Time Fiddle Champion of Michigan in 2022 and 2023. He runs the “Michigan Fiddle” website to promote and preserve Michigan’s fiddle traditions and has worked with various artists, contributing to albums and performances.
Trae’s storytelling skills are rooted in his academic background. He earned a master’s degree in storytelling from East Tennessee State University, where he studied the ethics and spiritual foundations of historical storytelling. His deep knowledge of folk traditions and his experience as a musician led him to be featured in the “Magazine Pathways Across America” for his work as a storyteller.
Despite no longer actively touring, Trae remains a beloved figure in the Great Lakes region, occasionally performing in concerts. His novel, The Crippled King, explores themes of leadership, survival, and unexpected bonds, while Mouth of Fire and The Secret of the Dark Forest continue to showcase his talent for creating complex worlds filled with rich histories and compelling characters. With his unique blend of music, storytelling, and fantasy writing, A. Trae McMaken continues to leave a lasting impact on readers and audiences alike.
