Daniel Silva is one of the most respected names in modern spy fiction, but his path to becoming a bestselling author wasn’t precisely planned. Silva was born in Michigan in the early 1960s and raised in California. He was a child from a small town and often felt bored and restless. In fact, reading became his prison break, in particular with spy thrillers. Even as a child, he was aware of his eventual aspiration to be a writer of some sort—but life was going to take a different rout first.

He majored in international relations in graduate school, envisioning himself in diplomacy or foreign affairs for the future. Nevertheless, during the time in school, he got a surprising chance: a job at United Press International (UPI) where he was involved in the 1984 Democratic National Convention coverage. Things changed for Silva after this experience. He abandoned school to follow journalism, reporting in the Middle East eventually as a foreign correspondent. Through his journalism activities, he visited the Persian Gulf, Cairo, and other places. This exposure gave him an intricate knowledge of international politics, global conflict, spying—issues that would form the background of his books.

While he was stationed abroad, Silva came across Jamie Gangel, a fellow journalist, and a future wife. They got married in 1987 and lived in Washington, D.C. , where Silva was a CNN journalist and continued with his career. But in 1995, almost 10 years after their marriage, Silva discreetly admitted to a desire he had kept to himself: writing novels. With the absolute support from Jamie, he began his writing career, unpublished, with his first book. Not even a year later, The Unlikely Spy was already out, and it was an instant bestseller.

That success led Silva to exit the world of television and devote his time solely to writing. After that, he opened more than 12 novels, every one of which became New York Times bestsellers and were translated into more than 30 languages. He is probably most famous for the Gabriel Allon series that throws together a spy thriller with the depth of historical research and the richness of character developments. Readers are mesmerized with how Silva effortlessly knits together art, history, and politics, creating stories that are engrossing and authentic at the same time.

Silva’s protagonist, Gabriel Allon, is not only an agent of the secret services but also an art restorer, a man who struggles with the loss of his loved ones, and someone whom readers have liked over the years. Just these layers of feelings comprise the aspect of Silva’s writing that stands out. In addition to all the sneaky missions and terrorist plots, there is always a love story or an anecdote about humanity behind them.

Silva, however, still keeps the art of storytelling as his primary focus in spite of the acclaim he has deservedly received. In order to gather the material for his books, he works hard for hours, and is known to have been in the very locations he is writing about. Not simply by fancy, but also by actual experience and diligent research, his narratives get molded.

Over and over again Daniel Silva has shown that the great thrillers are not just about gunfire and shootings—They are about characters, history, and the tough decisions taken in the dark corners of global occurrences. In case that you are not an avid reader of his books and just recently discovered his writings, or conversely, have been a fan and follower for a long time, the one thing that characterizes Daniel Silva’s novels is their capacity not to be considered as mere stories. Rather they become a voyage into the heart of international intrigue, the master of the genus telling it.
