Many people around the world know and love Danielle Steel. She was born August 14, 1947 in New York City. Her full name is Danielle Fernandes Dominique Schuelein-Steel. Her family is German-Jewish and Portuguese. As a child she spent a lot of time in France. Her parents divorced when she was 8. After that she started reading and writing more. It helped her feel better and that’s how her love of writing began.
Danielle wrote her first novel when she was 19 while she was a student at New York University. Her first book was published in 1973. Since then she has written over 190 books and over 800 million copies have been sold. That’s a lot. Not many writers achieve that.
Her books are about love, pain, hope. The characters in her stories live in rich or fancy settings but go through real problems. She writes about mental health, addiction, abuse, war. These are serious subjects that’s why her books feel so real to so many readers.
Even though she’s famous she works hard. Sometimes she’s working on 5 books at once. She’s lived most of her life in California but loves Paris and goes there often. That city gives her a lot of inspiration.
She is not only an author. Danielle is a mom who cares about helping people. After her son Nick Traina died in 1997 she wrote a book about him called His Bright Light. It’s about his life and his struggles with mental illness. The money from that book goes to a charity she started to help people with mental health issues. She also supports homeless causes.
22 of her books have been made into movies. 2 of them were even nominated for Golden Globes. This brings her stories to people who don’t read books.
Besides novels, she’s written poetry and children’s books. She’s proven she can write in many styles but always stays true and emotional.
She still writes. She’s been writing her whole life and it still means everything to her. Her life has had ups and downs and she shares that in her stories.
