Zakiya Dalila Harris is an American author best known for her first book, The Other Black Girl. The novel came out in 2021 and was quickly noticed by Hollywood. Hulu, a popular streaming service, plans to turn it into a movie. Her book is a mix of thriller and satire, showing the real problems Black people face in mostly white workplaces, like racism and unfair treatment. Harris studied English at the University of North Carolina, then earned her MFA in Creative Writing at The New School in New York. While she was a student, she worked many jobs—she helped at a film company, worked at a pie shop, and did internships at publishing companies. After school, she worked at Penguin Random House as an editor, where she saw how books are made and published. But she left her job to focus on her dream of writing a novel. She worked part-time at a cake shop and taught creative writing to children while writing her book. Her own work life gave her the idea for The Other Black Girl. She knew how hard it was to work in publishing as a Black woman, and she wanted to share that truth. Her life was not easy—low pay, long commutes, side jobs—but her love for writing stayed strong. Harris now writes in coffee shops and tries to keep her work life and personal life separate, although this is not always easy. Her writing is inspired by her own life and by the Black Lives Matter movement. When she is not writing, she likes watching movies, listening to true crime podcasts, dancing at themed parties, and spending time with friends. Harris writes to give a voice to Black women, and many readers feel seen and heard in her stories.
