About the Awakening Series
The Awakening Series by Charles Martin follows the very heartfelt and emotional story of the characters experiencing heartbreak, getting healed, and going through love that is strong even in darkest times. The two-book series, set in a tranquil Southern town in South Carolina, depicts the deeply heartfelt story of Dylan and Maggie Styles—whose lives have been dramatically transformed by a tragic event.
In The Dead Don’t Dance, the author introduces us to Dylan who is unfortunately going through a nightmare nobody would wish upon themselves, the stillbirth of his son and the coma of his wife, Maggie. Being a man who is closely tied to nature and known for his physical strength and reliance on himself, the character of Dylan, however, is faced with a situation where even strength is not quite enough. While he remains at the hospital beside Maggie, he is compelled to think over himself, doubt his faith, and seek for a world that makes sense to him because it seems totally broken.
Immediately after the loss story, there is a reflection on quiet miracles – such small things that are often ignored by us if we are not paying due attention. The path which Dylan is taking is that of gradual restoration, strengthened and propelled by loyalty and friendship, the unexpected manifestation of grace, and the very basic action of persevering. To this extent, the novel casts forth the uttermost and heartfelt interrogation on life, love, and faith, in a manner that is almost off-hand but still intensely real.
The uplifting sequel, Maggie, has news of a faint light of hope with its continuation of the story. She has come out of her coma to a new life after several months spent in that state. However, coming back to life does not necessarily mean that everything returns to the old condition. Now bargaining their way into coping with the situation, they need to relearn living side by side along with the unexpected grief they both share. The narrative, thus, is talking about loving a second time, a piece of potentially unbreakable hope, and continuing to love, even though the life is nothing like what you had planned.
