About the Beartown Series
Beartown (the original title in Swedish being Björnstad) is a three part book series written by the famous author Fredrik Backman – and translated beautifully by Neil Smith. Its originally Swedish publishers are Piratförlaget – over in Sweden – while in the States its a Simon & Schuster production. The books are set in a dusty little hockey town where everyone seems to know each other’s business; & at the very heart, the story revolves around the lives of lots of its denizens. After the shocking rape of Maya Andersson by none other than the hockey team’s star player – Kevin Erdahl – the whole town is thrown into a maelstrom of outrage, guilt and – to be fair – a healthy dose of fear.
The series delves into some very tough subjects – including sex crime, trauma, compounded by victim blaming, the deeply ingrained problems of toxic masculinity, the all too slow road to healing & redemption, as well as just how messy the human experience can be. Not one to shy away from the tough stuff, Backman has said that doing all that research beforehand was a huge task; & when asked how he went about writing such a heavy subject he admitted “i spent loads of time researching this one, chatted to over 100 people who’d been through similar things – some of those tales were pretty bloody horrific – & it was a real struggle to get it all down on paper – as it probably should have been.”
