About the Colonel Race Series

In‍‌‍‍‌ her Colonel Race series, Agatha‍‌‍‍‌ Christie wrote a captivating combination of sspense, danger, and human ‍‌‍‍‌emotion. The characters in these novels are led by Colonel Race, a composed but very perceptive intelligence officer, who, in spite of himself, is usually entangled in some sort of intrigue or crime. Detective Poirot or Miss Marple hardly outshine him in popularity, but the audience cannot help recognizing his inner power and moral ‍‌‍‍‌integrity. The series starts with The Man in the Brown Suit (1924) where a young woman called Anne goes on an adventure that leads to murder, secret codes and a mysterious stranger. Colonel Race is behind the scenes guiding the story with his experience and insight. In Cards on the Table (1936) he teams up with Poirot at a deadly bridge party where the line between game and murder disappears. In Death on the Nile (1937) he takes us to Egypt where love, jealousy and greed turn a peaceful cruise into a nightmare. And in Sparkling Cyanide (1945) we have a chilling tale of memory, betrayal and poison at a dinner table for seven.

Throughout the series Christie shows us how ordinary settings can hide dark motives and how Colonel Race always brings calm logic to chaos. The mix of exotic locations, clever plots and timeless suspense makes these books perfect for fans of classic detective fiction. Each story can be read as a standalone but together they form a great portrait of one of Christie’s most intriguing recurring characters.
