“The FBI Trilogy” by Allison Brennan unfurls in diverse regions of the United States and draws upon crimes that seem all too real and realistic to the average life. Every novel revolves around a separate case, while the three novels essentially represent the same dark atmosphere, the same sense of the threat of danger lurking around the corner with the recognition that justice has its price. It not only revolves around the idea of crime-solving. It’s about the people “behind the badge and the effect of the badge on the heart and soul of the people.” As the novels essentially form “a string of connected pearls that represent the same atmospheric and thematic harmonic that essentially interlaces with the others,” they essentially need to “be read in sequence for full effect.”

In the first book, Sudden Death, a killing begins, that of a homeless war veteran, but it is a crime that eventually leads to a far larger and darker pattern of violence. FBI agent Megan Elliott is a believer in rules and responsibility, but Jack Kincaid, an ex-soddier, takes a different line, and his instincts come before the system. When he and Megan are teamed, it is explosive, complicated, and emotionally truthful. In Fatal Secrets, human trafficking takes center stage, and ICE agent Sonia Knight and FBI agent Dean Hooper are forced to form a partnership neither wants. This is made far harder for Sonia, Son, and Dean, as they soon realize the true evil is far larger and far nastier than they had anticipated. The third and final novel, Cutting Edge, highlights domestic terror and cyber terrorism. Nora English, an FBI agent, leads an investigation where the truth is far from easy to take.

The truly remarkable aspect of the FBI Trilogy, however, is that the characters feel so believable. They get things wrong, they quarrel with each other, and they passionately believe in what they do. The writing style of the books is easy to understand, and this can be a big help for people who do not speak English as their native language, but still, the books contain a lot of tension and emotional drama. Overall, a good choice for FBI thrillers with a high level of character and subject matter, with a bit of romance, would be this trilogy.
