About the Green Angel Series

The Green Angel series by Alice Hoffman – a truly moving and emotionally charged read for young folks. Its got a nice gentle tone to it, but it still very much deals with the hard stuff – loss, pain and trying to pick up the pieces after something truly awful happens. The series consists of only two books, but let us tell you, they really deliver. Green Angel is the first book, which introduces us to Green, a 15-year-old girl who finds herself completely alone when a disaster takes her family away. The environment around her is really depressing – just picture a scenery that looks grey and is covered in ashes, nothing is growing as it should, and even nature is going crazy. Green is, of course, trying to live through it all but she is extremely overwhelmed with the mix of sadness, anger, and memories that keep haunting her. She is often at her garden which, to be honest, dealing with plants is much simpler than dealing with people right now, but at the same time, she is also gradually forgetting her old self through this. The pace of the story is a slow simmer, and that makes it even more authentic – it depicts how sorrow can break a person but also how little things in the world could bring a ray of sunshine into someone’s life. Then there’s the second book, Green Witch – Green’s story carries on from here and this time the focus is a bit more on people and all the stories they have to share. Green starts listening to what others have to say and is actually learning from them – in doing so she realises that grief doesn’t just hurt, but it can also lead to some pretty amazing things like love, courage and hope. Writing is simple but clear – it makes the books a breeze to read, but at the same time they’re super meaningful and thought provoking. You can read each one on its own if you want to, but together they tell this much deeper story about healing, memory, and choosing to move forward, even when it feels like the last thing you want to do.
