About the Grimes in Federation Service Series
The Grimes in Federation Service series by A. Bertram Chandler is a great choice for anyone who loves science fiction that throws space travel and strange worlds into a blender and presses puree. These stories follow John Grimes, a space officer who has a knack for getting lost – but somehow always ends up right in the middle of something pretty big.
In The Broken Cycle, one of the series’ most popular books, Grimes finds himself on board a ginormous alien spaceship. But that’s not even the most mind-blowing part – he’s also stuck in an entirely different universe, one ruled by a super powerful alien being. And Grimes isn’t alone – he’s got Una Freeman, a young cop, along for the ride. Together they pop up in some kind of cosmic Garden of Eden – only this one’s got two snakes for goodness sake! The story’s totally weird in the best possible way, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what’s going to happen next.
The series is really engaging – it fast to go through and loaded with insane ideas. Chandler is pretty amazing at creating worlds that people can feel even if they are totally crazy. Just take Spartan Planet as an illustration – Grimes lands on a planet where there are only men, and women are more like a thing of the past. The manner in which society functions there is equally terrifying and interesting, and the arrival of a female doctor causing havoc makes it a whole new thing. It is a very entertaining book that challenges your thoughts.
Other books like Star Courier and Star Light are just as wild and unpredictable – Grimes is either working his way up the ranks of space command or drifting through the galaxy like a lost soul. His life is a non-stop rollercoaster of danger, weird creatures and tough choices. Even when things get really cosmically weird, there’s always a human side to the story to keep things grounded.
One thing that readers really love about this series is how easy the books are to get through – just when you think you know where the story’s going, something new and unexpected comes out of left field. The twists aren’t forced, they actually make sense and keep you turning the page. Even when the sci-fi parts get really out there, the characters keep the story from flying off the rails.
