About the Harley Quin Series
Agatha Christie‘s Harley Quinn stories stand out from her typical detective fare. Rather than the usual tangled web of clues and suspects you find in her other whodunits, these stories feel more like magic. Mr. Harley Quin isn’t really a gumshoe at all, he just shows up when someone is at a loss or thrown for a loop, and somehow or other -it doesn’t seem to make any sense at first – he helps them see the way of things. You get the sense that he’s privy to information nobody else has access to.
The majority of the narratives point to the commencement of the stories in quite normal circumstances – a stately home during a soirée, a quiet little seaside town, or a snug little inn – but with the arrival of Quin the whole vibe changes. As a result of the arrival of Quin, the air changes completely. Secrets and ancient memories resurface, and individuals are compelled to face what they have been trying to shove into the deepest parts of their minds. In other words, he is with Mr. Satterthwaite, an old gentleman who just kind of goes along and learns from Quin. Their relationship doesn’t seem like a conventional one and is somewhat mystical or spiritual, as if they share a secret that none of us can quite understand.
These stories were written back in the 1920s and 30s – but in a way that still feels timeless and pretty emotional even today. They do a great job of blending mystery with sadness, love, and second chances. From The Coming of Mr. Quin all the way to Harlequin’s Lane, each one has a heart and a message all its own. Some are set in all the right places – London or Monte Carlo, etc. – while others are in far more exotic locations by the sea. What they all have in common, though, is that they remind readers that mystery isn’t just about some crime or other – a lot of times it’s about people, and how the truth can just completely upend someone’s life.
