John Grimes starts as a young officer in the Federation Survey Service. He’s just out of school and full of hope but things don’t go according to plan. Space is a lot more complicated than he expected. He visits strange planets, meets odd creatures and gets into all sorts of trouble.

As he goes along he changes. At first he’s unsure and makes mistakes but later he’s captain of his own ship. He learns to survive in space and make his own way far from home.

The author A. Bertram Chandler used to work at sea and you can feel that in the way he writes. The books have a kind of sea adventure feel to them even though they’re set in space. There’s action, some humour and lots of exploring.
