About the Savages Series

If you like thrillers that feel real and intense you should definitely check out the Savages series by Don Winslow. These books are full of energy, emotion and danger – and once you start reading you can’t stop. The story centers around three main characters: Ben, Chon and a young woman named Ophelia (everyone calls her O). They’re more than just friends. Their connection is deep, complicated and tested in ways you can’t imagine. What starts out as a story about friendship and love becomes something much bigger – something about survival, loyalty and making impossible choices in a world of crime and chaos.

The first book Savages jumps right in. Ben is calm and thoughtful. He grows high quality weed and uses the money to support charities and causes he believes in. Chon his best friend is the opposite. He’s tough, has a military background and doesn’t hesitate to use violence when needed. They live in Southern California and run a very successful (but illegal) weed business. Life is good for them – until the Mexican Baja Cartel shows up and wants in.

Ben and Chon refuse to work with the cartel. That’s when everything starts to fall apart. To send a message the cartel kidnaps O. She’s not only their close friend but also someone they both love. Her abduction puts Ben and Chon in a dangerous fight – one that will test how far they’ll go to get her back. What follows is a fast moving, emotionally intense story with clever twists, dark humor and unforgettable moments. It’s more than just a crime novel – it’s a story about love, sacrifice and how far people will go to protect each other.

But Winslow didn’t stop there. In The Kings of Cool the second book (though it’s a prequel) he takes us back in time. This book shows us how Ben, Chon and O became the people they are in Savages. We see them as younger versions of themselves trying to figure life out in the chaos of Southern California. The story goes back to the 1960s and moves through different decades showing us how the choices made by their parents and the people around them shaped everything.

The Kings of Cool doesn’t just tell us more about the trio—it goes deeper. We meet their families, uncover long buried secrets and start to see how the past connects to the present. The book builds up to a dramatic and emotional ending. It’s a wild ride but also a very human one. You see the pain, the love, the confusion—the real stuff that makes people who they are.

What makes these books so good is how Don Winslow writes. His characters are real. They’re not perfect. They make mistakes, they hurt, they laugh, they fight. The conversations between them are sharp and honest. You feel like you’re right there with them, hearing every word and feeling every moment. Even when things get violent or crazy, there’s always a heartbeat behind it—something human that pulls you in.

Winslow also tackles real issues. He talks about drugs, corruption, power and the gray areas between right and wrong. But he does it in a way that feels natural—not like he’s trying to teach you something but just showing you the world as it is. And through it all the emotions are always there. Love, anger, hope, fear—all of it plays a part in this story.

Both books got great reviews from critics and readers. Savages was even one of the best books of the year according to Stephen King and The New York Times. Later it was made into a movie by Oliver Stone which brought even more attention to the series. But honestly no movie can match the depth and energy of the books themselves.

So if you’re thinking of starting the series get ready for a ride. These books are not just about crime or drugs—they’re about people trying to hold on to each other in a world that’s falling apart. They’re about friendship, family and the lines we’re willing to cross for love.

So grab a copy, settle in and lose yourself in Savages. You might not come out the same.
