Superintendent Battle – a series that shines a light on one of Agatha Christie‘s most under appreciated detectives, the usually quiet and unflappable Superintendent Battle. He may not be known for being loquacious but his understated calm and razor sharp mind have left a lasting impression. People really love Battle because he’s just so down to earth and has that rare ability to solve a case without all the fanfare, he doesn’t rush in or feel the need to show off like some detectives, instead he quietly watches, listens and thinks things through as each case comes together. He manages to approach investigations with a steady hand and loads of confidence. and people just love the way he goes about things because he’s got a complete behind the scenes approach to things, he thinks of the police and detectives as being a bit of a mixed bag – sometimes clever and sometimes daft but he always seems to see the bigger picture. Despite the fact we don’t know much about his personal life, a small but telling comment in the first book lets us know he’s a married man with 5 kids – and that little piece of information does a lot to humanise him. This series may not be as widely known as Poirot or Miss Marple but its got its own very quiet charm & it’s full to bursting with mystery, logic & a real understanding of the human condition – all the things Agatha Christie fans adore.
