About the Turing Hopper Series
The Turing Hopper series by Donna Andrews is a blend of mystery and technology. The story centers on Turing Hopper, an unconventional detective who is, in fact, an artificial intelligence program created by computer expert Zack. Her name is a clever nod to the renowned computer scientists Alan Turing and Grace Hopper.
The first book in the series, You’ve Got Murder, was released in 2002 and follows the mysterious disappearance of Zack. Although Turing exists only as a program within the university library system of Crystal City, she takes it upon herself to investigate. She enlists the help of a few real-world allies, including Maude, a secretary, and Tim, a copy machine technician. Together, they set out to solve the case.
Turing uses security cameras and computer data for her investigation. Also over the run of the story she comes to put forth the idea of a real person rather than a program smart, curious at times and even funny. The series’ structure is of mystery, humor, and science fiction elements which in turn present deeper philosophical questions on consciousness and what it means to be “alive” or to think without being human.
If you enjoy contemporary takes on the classic mystery this series is for you.
